Symantec GoBack and Farstones RestoreIT comparison to RollBack Rx - Is it the best Alternative RestoreIT solution? disaster recovery

line
Norton GoBack and Farstones RestoreIT are the only competitive roll-back solution close enough to be shown on the RollBack Rx radar screen. GoBack and RestoreIT's comparison and competitiveness is limited.

GoBack Software Overview - goback vista and Window 7 compatible

GoBack is a Microsoft Windows based disk utility, that monitors and records up to 8.3Gb of disk changes. When the disk activity is idle, it tags these as safe checkpoints. GoBack then allows the hard drive to be restored to any of the checkpoints. It does this by effectively undoing all changes made to the disk since the checkpoint point was created.  GoBack replaces the MBR Master Boot Record, and also replaces the partition table with a single partition. Because of this change to the partition table, this can cause problems when dual booting other operating systems on the same hard disk.

RollBack Rx GoBack restoreit and reboot-to-restore evolution

RollBack Rx's Snapshots vs GoBack and Farstones RestoreIT's Buffer Space

GoBack uses a buffer space for storage of its change files using the FIFO method of storage (First In First Out).  This limits the amount of data and eventually - how far back you can actually go back to restore.  Thus when the buffer space becomes full, GoBack starts to delete its earlier checkpoints and storage of earlier data.

How Does GoBack Compare with RollBack Rx?

Goback's technology is based on a file level monitoring and logging technique. It needs to consume a large chunk of the hard disk space to create a history change file. The monitoring system is picking up every little bit of file changes regardless of whether or not, it is worth to know or see. A simple system restart will generate 100s of file changes to log. It really makes one wonder if more truly is better; in Goback's case, more is definitely not better. The details file change history logging consumes the hard disk space quickly, not to mention, the tremendous pressure it puts on system resources.

RollBack Rx's snapshot-based continuous backup solution delivers added security by allowing you to store the state of your PC more often, while using less drive space. Should the need arise, you could easily restore your PC to any of its unlimited number of snapshots.  This could potentially be months or even years ago. These snapshots could be automated silently in fixed intervals such as 1 hour ago, or whenever the system is turned on or a particular file is executed.

Norton Goback (Symantec) vs RollBack Rx comparion chart

Norton's Goback (by Symantec) is a similar solution to our RollBack Rx. Below are some technical benefits that RollBack Rx has over Nortons Goback. We encourage users to evaluate both Rollback Rx and and Nortons Goback for an objective comparison of the two utilities.

Goback compared to RollBack Rx

RollBack Rx

Norton GoBack and

Farstones RestoreIT

Comparison Result

Does not reserve any portion of hard disk for "protected data". The program data structure takes 0.07% of disk space to create up to 60,000 snapshots.

GoBack and Farstones RestoreIT Reserves a portion of hard disk as a buffer to track file changes. The buffer is about 20-30% of disk size.

Norton's GoBack and Farstones RestoreIT takes more disk space than Rollback Rx.

The time Rollback Rx takes to restore a snapshot is independent from the amount of information contained in the snapshot.

GoBack and Farstones RestoreIT takes a longer time to restore a checkpoint as more information is stored in the buffer.

GoBack and Farstones RestoreIT takes longer to restore the computer.

Rollback Rx is a sector level program. It creates "sector maps" of the protected hard disk. It does not track every file change. The system performance is unrelated to the amount of snapshots or the data that has been created.

GoBack and Farstones RestoreIT uses a buffer to track all the file changes. When more and more information gets accumulated in the buffer, the system performance deteriorates.

GoBack and Farstones RestoreIT slows down the system as more changes are made to the system.

Rollback Rx will not take a snapshot until the user wants to create one; either via a manual snapshot or through a  scheduled task.

GoBack and Farstones RestoreIT automatically creates "checkpoints" for the system regardless of  whether the user wants to or not.

Goback is less flexible on creating and managing snapshots.

Rollback Rx does not use a buffer. The snapshots will always be there unless user deletes the snapshot.

With Goback; The buffer used to track file changes is a FIFO buffer (First In First Out). Let's say the buffer size is 10GB. If a user copies a couple of DVDs, the buffer will become full. When this occurs the "last checkpoint" will be pushed out the buffer. If this happens, the user would not be able to recover any checkpoint.

You can count on Rollback Rx to be able to recover from any instances or number of files copied etc. There are no surprises. If you have created a snapshot, you know you can always get back to it.

Rollback Rx offers several deployment utilities that allow administrators to remotely and silently deploy Rollback to a network of PCs instantly with pre-set program settings.

N/A - Goback can not be seamlessly deployed.

Rollback Rx is more enterprise scalable.

Rollback Rx Enterprise offers a scalable client/server structure. Server can remotely manage client desktops protected by Rollback thru Internet. Rollback Enterprise console always provides various network management related tools.

Goback can not be remotely managed without using third party networking utilities.

Rollback Rx provides more features designed for network administrators of larger organizations.

Rollback Rx comes in two versions, Professional and Server. Professional is ideal for end users or professional users that do not require remote management.  The Server edition consists of the Professional client along with a remote management console and admin dashboard for remote management.

Goback is available in a single end-user version only.

Rollback Rx is more flexible on pricing and marketing strategies.

Rollback Rx can take a snapshot of crashed system from subsystem console and then recover data from the crashed state. This essentially eliminates the "gap of restoring system to an earlier time". This makes Rollback ahead above GoBack and RestoreIT.

GoBack and Farstones Restore-IT does have a subsystem console, however both GoBack and RestoreIT's console is limited in its functionality.

Rollback Rx has a distinct feature that allow users to recover data from a crashed system in case of BSOD and OS corruption.

In addition to the system restore feature, Rollback Rx is also a strong configuration management solution. Based on its "sector mapping" architecture, users can create several independent snapshots each having different applications and data. User can switch back and forth among the snapshots for configuration management, sales demo, or software training purposes.

Goback, is a file level filtering program. It is not able to create the absolute independent checkpoints" that user can use for configuration management purpose.

Rollback Rx is more than a system restore solution.

"I've been a Goback and RestoreIt user, but stopped because I do defrags daily. As you know, this chews up Goback's buffer and RestoreIt's also. I had to manually create more space by deleting files... Rollback RX Pro is just what the doctor order (no pun intended). Kudos to you for creating such a needed utility!" - Mel -

COMPETITOR: SYMANTEC GOBACK®

Formerly known as Roxio Goback, Adaptec Goback, Norton Goback as well as other names, Goback has been sold and transferred frequently from one company to another. We can only assume it has not been pleasing its vendors. Goback is the only competitor software close enough to be shown on the RollBack Rx™ radar screen. Goback's comparison and competitiveness is limited.  Its technology based on a file level monitoring and logging technique. It needs to consume a large chunk of the hard disk space to create a change history file. The monitoring system is picking up every little bit of file changes regardless of whether or not, it is worth to know or see. A simple system restart will generate 100s of file changes to log. It really makes one wonder if more truly is better; in Goback’s case, more is definitely not better. The details file change history logging consumes the hard disk space quickly, not to mention, the tremendous pressure it puts on system resources. Currently Goback does not support Microsoft Vista.

COMPARE: SYMANTEC GHOST®

Formally known as Norton GhostSymantec Ghost® is the most popular computer system backup and imaging software. It allows users to make a copy of the entire system to an image file. The file can then be stored on CDs or network servers. In a case of disaster recovery, users can restore the image back onto the computer. The solution offered by Symantec Ghost is a slow solution, it takes several minutes or longer in most cases to create or restore the image file. The Ghost solution is a costly solution, the image file might be as large as the system itself or half of the system size in compressed format; However, compression takes a big toll on restore time. The Ghost solution is also a partial solution. Due to the amount of time and space required to create image files, it is impossible for users to create frequent backup image files. Therefore, in a case of disaster recovery, users are most likely to restore back to the date of initial P.C. setup condition. All the programs, files and data created afterwards are permanently lost.

COMPARED TO: IBM RAPID RESTORE®

Rapid Restore is the latest system recovery solution provided by IBM (now Lenovo) with their new PCs in attempt to replace the OEM recovery CDs. The software reserves a portion of the hard disk space to store a complete factory release image of the system. The reserved disk space is programmed as a hidden partition, inaccessible to most common users; however, an experienced user can remove the hidden partition easily. And thereby, leave the system unrecoverable. As a system imaging software, Rapid Restore shares the same deadly weakness with Symantec Ghost; it is only a partial solution. In a case of disaster recovery, users are set back to the initial factory release condition. All the programs, files and data created afterwards are permanently lost. Rapid Restore is also not rapid, as its name implies.. It takes many minutes to restore a system.

COMPARED WITH: GOLDENSOFT RECOVERY GENIUS®

Recovery Genius® takes the reboot-and-restore concept  further. It works deep within the hard drive and OS drivers and freezes the PC's settings. Technically speaking, its technology is based on a hard disk sector filtering technique. Recovery Genius reserves a portion of the hard disk space forredirecting the disk I/O commands. It allows users to keep the information in the protected space during restarts. It takes significantly less amount of space than the conventional imaging approach. Therefore, the time to restore is much less than Ghost or Rapid Restore. Everything seems ideal so far, until you run the Recovery Genius for the first time! It does not allow you to restore individual files from the backup storage, so it is all or nothing. Unfortunately, you can only get data you HAD and loose data you HAVE when you select a restore. This significant weakness is driving Recovery Genius away from common and corporate users. Recovery Genius is mainly valued as an restore-on-restart solution for the publicly shared PC markets.

As you can clearly see - RollBack Rx is the most advanced computer system and data maintenance software that has ever been created.
  • It offers the most restore points.
  • It takes least amount of disk space.
  • It takes least amount of system resources.
  • It offers most configuration options.
  • It is the fastest to create a restore point.
  • It is among the fastest to restore.
  • It is the only one to allow users to restore without data lost.
  • It is the only one to offer dynamic access control.
  • It is the only one to offer dynamic space management.
  • It is the easiest to operate
